Breast Implant replacement. Open capsulectomy
One of the most complex surgeries
The prosthesis replacement is an intervention that is practiced in people previously operated on breast augmentation surgery. Although it may seem like a simple operation, it is possibly one of the most complex surgeries to which the breast is submitted.
Breast implants do not last forever. A woman who undergoes breast augmentation surgery for the first time should know that she will need additional breast surgery during her lifetime.
In general, polyurethane coated prostheses tend to be less complicated than silicone coated ones.
Dr García Ceballos has a long time experience with polyurethane implants.
Reasons for prosthesis replacement
After several years, 10, 15 (and up to 20 years in some cases), mammary prosthesis need to be replaced by new ones, usually due to capsula formation, rupture, displacement or due to the deformity of the breast due to aging (double bubble):
- Changing the size and / or shape of the breast implant or breast.
- Capsular contracture involves the transformation of the breast into hard, round and in some cases painful.
- Prosthetic rupture: If the rupture of the prosthesis is confirmed by ultrasound or magnetic resonance, a replacement or at least removal of the implants is recommended as soon as possible, although it is not an emergency.
- Silicone covered implants are prone to move down and outwards than polyurethane ones.
- Breast ageing: this can cause a breast deformity such as the “double bubble”

Breast implant replacement
Replacing an implant with a silicone covered anatomical (teardrop) shape can lead to a higher risk of implant rotation; in these cases the use of anatomical polyurethane implants is recommended in order to avoid the risk of rotation.
Dr. Garcia Ceballos is an expert in the implantation of polyurethane prostheses and currently 95% of his patients choose this material. The choice of the type of prosthesis or material can be made according to the information received from your surgeon.
In cases in which the patient’s breast is scarce, it may be advisable to increase the protection of the new prosthesis by using a biological matrix that reduces the risk of visible wrinkles.
In case of rupture of the implant shell, Polytech provides a lifetime replacement- implant guarantee. Additional benefits apply to silicone-gel-filled breast implant with polyurethane coating used for a cosmetic augmentation: in case you become subject to a capsular contracture grade III -IV or implant dislocation/rotation with this type of implant, Polytech offers an additional replacement – implant guarantee for up to 10 years after implantation.

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and lasts approximately 1 to 2 hours and usually requires one night’s hospitalization.
Dr Garcia recommends removing and analyzing the capsule to look into the risk of Giant Cell Anaplastic Lymphoma within the capsule.
After the intervention, the patient should wear a postoperative bra and elastic band for one month, in case of silicone covered implants, and only the postoperative bra for prostheses with a polyurethane coating. The incorporation to the work will depend on the type of work that is carried out, can go from a few days after the intervention until 2 or 3 weeks.
Usually these operations tend to produce more bleeding than first time breast augmentations. This means that it may be necessary to keep drains in the breasts for a few days until the production of fluid is small enough for the body to reabsorb it.
The result can be seen one month after the intervention, but it takes at least one year to appreciate the final result.
The final result depends on the body characteristics and the breast of each patient, as well as the desires of each patient.
Subsequent treatments
Our breast implant replacement surgery incorporates treatment for scars during the intervention using growth factors.
We also offer the possibility of applying a laser treatment to the scars of the breast implant replacement one week and one month after the intervention.
The combination of these two treatments improves the quality and healing time of scars.
We carry out this intervention in Palma de Mallorca.
The price of the intervention is delivered after consulting with Dr. García Ceballos.

Our greatest asset is our customers
I have had a replacement prosthesis surgery with Dr. García Ceballos, I am happy, I have taken a great weight off my shoulders. He had a stone-hard chest and was in a lot of pain. The truth is that I was enduring the pain for a long time, until I decided to look for a trustworthy plastic surgeon, a specialist in breast surgery, and I found Dr. García Ceballos.
After the consultation, he inspired me with so much confidence that I did not hesitate for a second to put myself in his hands and have an operation. It is the best I have been able to do, nothing hurts and I have been better, a more beautiful and more symmetrical chest, also he did the intervention for the same scar that they did in my first surgery and I have no more scars. I am happy, thanks to Dr. García Ceballos and his entire team for accompanying me at all times.

Excellent treatment, exquisite care and unique and unbeatable attention. All are words of thanks and compliments to the best plastic surgeon in Mallorca, Dr. García Ceballos and his team, especially Irene. I had an implant replacement operation because I had the pip implanted and I had to remove them urgently. Everything was very fast, the preoperative, the intervention and the postoperative, what I liked the most is that we were able to organize the entire intervention in a very short time, and get out of the “quagmire” quickly and well.

In my case, I came from Menorca to have surgery in Mallorca because I had heard about Dr. García Ceballos and polyurethane prostheses. I did not find any plastic surgeon who offered me these prostheses and they told me about Dr. García Ceballos as a specialist in breast surgery with polyurethane implants. As my silicone prostheses gave me complications very soon, I was looking for a prosthesis that would give me a little more “guarantee” so to speak, or less probability of early complications. The Dr. explained all the differences between silicone and polyurethane prostheses and gave me the price of the replacement prosthesis in both cases so that I could decide which option best suited my interests. In the end, although the price of polyurethane implants is much higher than silicone, I preferred polyurethane implants because of the advantages they have over the others, and the truth is, I am happy and calm about the decision I made. It is true that price matters, but my peace of mind is priceless. Thanks for your help Dr. I am very grateful.

The after surgery period is not particularly difficult. Patients tend not to complain of pain when compared to a primary breast augmentation. Drains are recommended to control the level of bleeding and facilitate a faster recovery.
The duration of breast implants does not have a fixed period. The performance of a revision operation after a breast augmentation is often confused with the duration of the prostheses, which is the time that the prostheses remain intact.
Reoperation after a breast augmentation may be due to other complications that have nothing to do with the integrity of the prosthesis, such as capsular contraction, prosthesis displacement, breast sagging due to the passage of time, or the desire for breast augmentation. patient to vary the shape and / or volume of their breasts.
The risks of prosthesis replacement or removal depend on the procedures performed in conjunction with the explantation.
Before asking this question, what is the best option after removing a breast prosthesis should be considered. In this sense, it is important to attend to the needs of each patient. There is an option that we could define as “healthy” that would mean removing the prostheses and reconstructing the breast that remains without prosthesis, and another option that would be the “aesthetic” although “less healthy”, which would mean replacing them with new prostheses. This requires explanations and sharing with each patient. Thus, the most recommended prostheses are only those that best suit each patient.
As stated above, there is an option that we could define as “healthy” that would mean removing the prostheses and reconstructing the breast that remains without prosthesis, and another option that would be the “aesthetic” although “less healthy”, which would mean replacing them with new prostheses. . This requires explanations and sharing with each patient. Either of the two options is always possible according to the needs of each patient.
Encapsulation is not “per se” an indication for implant replacement unless it produces deformities in the breasts or pain, in which case it is the patient who must decide whether or not she is capable of tolerating this deformity and / or pain.
The capsule is a fibrous tissue that the body generates around the breast prosthesis in response to the stimulus that they suppose. The capsule has the ability to contract to a greater or lesser degree and thereby deforms the prosthesis and this makes the breast hard and irregular. Definitive treatment is carried out by surgical removal.
