Allows the correction of the shape and position of the ears:
- Children’s otoplasty: in children, the main cause of consultation is protruding ears, that is, prominent ears.
The fact that the boy or girl has protruding or protruding ears is not an indication that surgery is required.
The surgical indication is based on the fact that this condition produces a complex in the child, which may be due to marginalization or mistreatment at school, and that the child himself is affected by it.
It is not enough that a father or a mother believes it convenient to correct their child’s protruding ears to carry out the intervention.
In addition, on some occasions, with the growth of the skull, there is a compensation of the position of the ears, which can make the intervention unnecessary.
“The age that I consider appropriate to contemplate an otoplasty in a child from seven or eight years old” - Otoplasty in adults: in adults, in addition to the position in protruding ears, the consultation is usually focused on the correction of the lobes, and/or other alterations in the contour or size of the ear.
Adults may present, in addition to puffy ears, other alterations, among which the most frequent is elongated lobes in both men and women, and particularly torn earlobes in women.
The treatment of these presentations is surgical. You can visit the pages on the correction of elongated earlobes and the correction of torn earlobes for more information.
The intervention is usually performed under local anesthesia and sometimes under general anesthesia.
- The procedureconsists of making an incision in the back of the ear and accessing the cartilage by placing certain points to modify the structure and adjust the position and shape at a suitable distance.
- Thesurgery usually lasts 60 minutes for a correction of protruding ears and after the intervention the patient can return home with a turban-type bandage.
- You must wear the bandage for 4 days, after which it is removed and a soft elastic band is applied
- Revision one week after the intervention to remove the stitches. In children, absorbable stitches are usually placed so as not to have to bother them.
The expected result is a position of the ears closer to the skull with a greater definition of the folds. It is common for the ears to appear purple during the first weeks, with some insensitivity and stiffness. This is recovering as the months go by.

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to modify them to fit closer to the head. Clearly prominent ears can be teased by children and shy by adults. One of the techniques commonly used in otoplasty involves making a small incision in the back of the ear, sculpting the cartilage to reshape the ear, and then stitching it into a more pleasing shape. In most cases, the surgery leaves only a small scar that fades over time.
Typically, otoplasty is an outpatient procedure. That means you won’t need to spend the night in a hospital. The procedure may be performed in a hospital, in a surgical suite at your doctor’s office, or in a freestanding surgical center.
A small scar will remain after surgery, but it will fade over time. Once it has healed and since it is behind the ear, the scar is practically invisible.
Otoplasty has not been shown to cause hearing loss. However, some risks associated with surgery in general are also associated with otoplasty, such as redness, bleeding, inflammation, and infection.
In general, otoplasty is not a good option until after the child is four years old. At that age, the ears have already fully developed. Although otoplasty does not carry any increased risk when performed at an older age, many feel that if it is performed when the patient is younger, it will help preserve the child’s self-esteem since children with more prominent ears generally receive the teasing at school.
When the otoplasty is finished, the surgeon will place a large bandage around your head to help it heal correctly and to avoid any disturbance from an external agent. After a few days the bandages will be removed, and the surgeon will replace them with a much lighter bandage, similar to a hair tie. You will need to wear this bandage at night for about six weeks after surgery. Your doctor will give you specific instructions regarding how long you should wear the bandage based on your individual case.
In general, the price of an otoplasty ranges between €2,000 and €5,000. The cost of your otoplasty may depend on whether you have it done in a hospital, or in a doctor’s office. The degree and complexity of each particular case also influence the price. It should always be valued by the plastic surgeon to determine your budget.
As with any surgery, there are risks associated with otoplasty. However, choosing a qualified otoplasty specialist will greatly reduce the risks, which include infection, bruising, swelling, scarring, and bleeding. Much less frequently, numbness or bruising may occur. There are also risks specific to otoplasty, such as patient dissatisfaction with the results. The risk of dissatisfaction can be greatly reduced by keeping your expectations realistic and having a detailed discussion with your surgeon about your wishes regarding the results of your surgery.
Most surgeons advise otoplasty patients to avoid excessive activity for the first few weeks after the procedure. After four weeks you can begin light exercise and can resume contact sports after six weeks. However, each patient’s recovery period is unique and depends on their own circumstances. For best results, listen carefully to your doctor and follow his or her instructions exactly.
